That is a scary happening and I agree the heavy use of recreational drugs is a factor, but not the only one.

Alandhopewell, at the time of this occurrence were you aware that the author William Seabrook intentionally overdosed on drugs in 1945? Could his suicide have been an influence? Maybe something you picked up while reading "The Magic Island"?

I am truly glad you overcame that dark episode and hope it has not or will not occur again.

who really knows, it could be just the drugs or drugs and beliefs or something more sinister, it was mentioned before many cultures used hallucinogenic herbs to open their minds to the spirit world, they also used heat exhaustion etc. Either way drugs and the mind don't mix well and if your unfortunate and have a spirit or something come along I can't see it going straight to suicide... Why would so many hauntings happen if they just wanted to top people off at the first chance.

Mmmm... I don't know if it is only the drugs. I studied in The Netherlands, and many friends used 'natural' drugs on occasion (including myself sometimes...) and to be honest I never heard of any of them jumping before cars or trying to hang themselves. But, none of these people had any interest in the occult. So, it is probably the combination of 'dark thoughts' and 'changing your mindset', to be open to your own 'darker side' or maybe possibly 'darker entities'...

have to agree with rook, I actually had to pull a friend from in front of an oncoming car because she was told to... Though no one told her to get hit by a car or kill herself and to this day she still says it was like washing the dishes it felt so normal. She was into reading occult books and horror stories and took a lot of drugs mostly smoked pot she also watched movies where the outcomes of charecters were usually not of the best. If you purposely take drugs and alter your mind and continue to do it you will eventually do something out of the ordinary because you have fried your brain and mixed its signals. Unfortunately I also have a friend in a mental hospital because he believes aliens abducted his family and they now have a hit on him and that jesus came to see him last week. Some may laugh but hearing someone you love tellyou such things with so much conviction and belief is frightening.

I do not mean to be blunt but with the given details this may sum things up...

What is the chance that in your altered state of mind you looked at those materials and 'wondered' to yourself 'what would the other side be like?' and then during the 'process' reality kicked in and you realized just what you were doing and stopped yourself?

My opinion is that this was not a case of possession but a close call because of an altered state of mind.

Oh, this friend doesn't think his halucination was real btw, it felt real at the time, but he sees it as pure imagination. (he talked about the incident for years... As a funny anecdote:-)

The line, while under the influence of chemicals (be it 'natural' or chemical) between 'real' or just 'halucination' is sometimes difficult to draw.
Personally (and no intention here on engaging myself in the chemical world) I wouldn't rely on any experience while under influence.

You know that marijuana can make you halucinate... In a good way, but also in a bad way. I have a friend (when he was a student) had a bad trip and was chased home by a hoard of angry blue smurfs.
And that the THC stays in your body for weeks. So, if you use one day and the following day again, it builds up. Messing with your mind.
In many cultures halucinative drugs were used to come in contact with the spiritual world. So, messing with drugs, while being submurged in the occult texts you were reading (and who knows what you did in addition), you were basically open to it all, without use of protection. It is an open invitation.

One thing I have learned and have consistently seen in some of my paranormal teams cases is that when a person is 'under the influence" of something be it drugs, alcohol, even depression is an evil entities open door to be able to get in our body and begin to try and overtake it! Our mental state and strength of our spirit plays a key role in our ability to prevent any dark energy from entering our mind and body. This may have been the case in your situation, but usually all factors need to be present for oppression to set-in (a present evil spirit or dark energy/our weakened mental state and bodies immune system/also any provocation of sorts while stepping into the worlds of any negativity) like devil worship, ouija, etc...

In any case, I am glad to read that is in the past for you, and you are not affected by any past occurences. Good luck with all your future!

I dunno, the "occult" thing... Some of my daily practices could be labeled occult and I have not had any incidents like OP describes. Granted, for me "occult" just means secret, and out of mainstream practices. For a lot of people "occult" means dark-n-scary, dabbling in stuff better left alone. I also have never used recreational drugs, I unwind with video games. Maybe some chemical combination plus dabbling in darker areas brought this on?
Ok, I admit I'm a little confused by this experience. Alan, if it's not too personal, could you explain what sort of occult topics you were interested in? I've never heard of marijuana bringing about a suicidal episode, were there any other drugs involved? Or could the joint have had something else mixed in? I'm not trying to be snarky or anything, I've had several friends who have used marijuana back in the day and the only one who ever tried to hurt herself was using more than weed. I also get so perplexed by people who claim negative paranormal experiences while studying occult topics. "Occult" seems to be a blanket term that gets thrown on everything from smudging to summoning, and I would like to understand what happened.

I also don't think reading the books would have made him try to commit suicide. I think there was something else going on.

I felt something was missing in the middle not the end, I can not think of any stories I read where READING of the occult would cause this to happen, as the OP makes it seem. I would guess the OP has actually practiced heavily in the occult because I have read many books and articles on the occult and never had any issues... Just my opinion

newhunter and BadJuuJuu - when I read this story, at first I wondered if there should have been more to it too. But I read it again and it reminded me of an something that happened to me when I was a teenager. Granted, there were no drugs, but it scared the hell out of me. Maybe I just took it too personally and related it to my experience, but I understand why he ended this way.

After re-reading this I believe I mistook what you meant by your comment, I'm believing you meant it did not feel abnormal and if this is so it makes more sense. I do still feel as though there is something missing though.

That it would appear you had done this before or else why would it seem normal. I'm not sure if you have given us the whole picture because it seems to me there is a piece of the puzzle missing. I may be wrong and correct me if I am but I just feel your not telling us something.
