All things considered there is another option... That after a full day of kayaking, swimming and relaxing when it came time for movie watching under the stars the O/P simply dozed off and had a very 'real' dream... The star being this 'jester' that very well might represent 'the folly' of trying to be 'not oneself'.

Doesn't explain its appearance at the O/P's home however... Or does it... Has anyone else ever had a dream... And woke up... Then upon returning to bed had the dream continue? I have...it's like it won't or can not end until a certain point is reached.

Just a thought.

Well, if I wanted a break from supernatural comings and goings the last thing I'd do is spend time alone in the heart of nature.

Taking a day off from being a witch? That's like me taking a day off from being a vampire to go sun baking. Likelihood of that happening: 0.00%

I can understand weird entities, spending a day in the forest and so forth. But the tone of this witch identity seems somewhat forced. One does not take a break from who they are. There are witches here, who are probably perplexed over some of your prose.

I'm baffled over the choice of locale, and the idea of taking a break from being a witch. You've indicated you want help with this, I'd suggest if your faith feels like something you need a break from maybe it's not for you? 😕
I can only speak witchcraft's praises. Though I don't identify as a witch, I likely live close to how most do. It's not something I wish to tone down, or get away from.

ShadowFire - I'm going to have to add my confusion to Biblio's, Logan's and Rook's. Everyone needs a day off sometimes, but it doesn't change (or shouldn't anyway) who we are. I'm a mom and a mimi (grandma) and when I'm at work (my parental time off) that doesn't change who I am.

While reading your account the first time, I had a stray thought about why the jester-type entity kept showing itself to you. Maybe it was to prove to you that you cannot change who you are. Like I said, just a thought.

Interesting rook, I have a good friend and former colleague who is a doctor of archaeology and when in that field worked primarily on excavations of medieval sites in western Europe, she is also something of an expert on Scandanavian history, culture, myths and legends of her periods of interest. I might have a chat to her on the subject of olivr, Olaf and any associated observances.

I am going to 'tread lightly' concerning this one. I will address the question the O/P has raised as to 'why' they saw what they 'saw'.

If the O/P was camping during that first weekend of March 2008 (early March) then there are two possible things at play. There was a new moon that week end...

New Moon: New Moon, Medieval: Chaste, Celtic: Moon of Winds, NeoPagan: Death Moon... It has slightly different meanings depending on ones point of reference.

However there was something else I read about while researching Early March of 2008.

On March 08 2008 there was a NEW MOON and Mar 09 of every year is called The Day of Olvir (Norwegian in origin). Here is what He did...

Olvir; a Norwegian who organized festivities to 'Pagan' Gods which defied King Olaf Tryggvason. He was assassinated by Olaf, and his accomplices were also put to death, tortured or exiled. It is to remember the martyrs who maintained their lives and the old traditions and are still celebrated in some places around the world, even to this day.

However I must point out that while Norwegians did settle in Texas, the settlements were closer to Waco, Dallas and in North East Texas. Canyon Lake is in Central Texas, very close to Gruene, which is German in origin.

Interesting. I can't claim any particular expertise, but I am confused by what appear to be culture and period specific medieval Western European apparitions in the US.
Could you describe the attire and masks in more detail? Especially the jester outfit.
Reason being I am always curious as to whether an apparition is perceived as it was or is it perceived as how the observer interprets a telepathically conveyed concept? Sorry that probably wasn't too well phrased.

Could you also explain a bit more about your witchcraft? The reason I ask that is that there seem to be a number of different meanings to the term. I gather the term generally relates to religious practices rooted in worship of or respect for spiritual entities related to the natural environment?

Like Biblio, I did wonder about the emphasis you placed on not being a witch for a day and being normal. Also whatever happened to the small entity who followed you home? You said it stayed until dawn, was that the last time you saw him/her?

This may seem odd, but I'm going to ask you a question about the initial premise of your day in the park: How does one take a day off from being oneself? From my understanding of witchcraft, it is based upon observing the balances of nature and performing rituals which acknowledge the source of power/life. I'm trying to be as accurate as possible without going into specifics, to avoid offending you or other practicing witches who are regular contributors; my information in this area is not firsthand.

I completely understand needing to take a break to recharge oneself, but wouldn't being in a natural environment for a day be more fulfilling *as* a witch? While I wouldn't suggest carrying a chalice, candles, and a blade into a state park for a ritual, isn't being mindful of nature a key element in witchcraft?

I want to be very clear here: I'm asking because I have no particular faith, nor do I have an axe to grind with any religious practice. I'm "Bibliothecarius" because I'm a man of books; even if I have not had any time to relax and to read during my day, my head has a constant background hum of information and literature I've absorbed; they are integrated into my thought processes. Clearly, you anticipated some event, but "purposely ignored all the warning signs of an approaching supernatural experience" (paragraph 7). Being alert to danger yet ignoring your perceptions is very dangerous. You didn't need to perform a ritual to become aware of the imminent event, but you chose to leave yourself vulnerable to a potential threat.

I've also got questions about the spirits, their masks, their origin, and why you drove home when you noticed that the jester figure was interested in you (surely you didn't intend to show it where you lived). However, I'm still stuck on point one, so I'll leave those questions either to others better versed in the practice of your craft, or to those who not as stymied as I am by the idea of taking a day off from being yourself.
