WOAH! I just checked out that link, Nich.
Holy _______!
Is that for REAL?
Well, Crud. No wonder there is such a fear of them.
I came up with a few more questions, though, sorry. Are they ALL female?
SOME seem to see them in HUMAN like form, and SOME seem to see them in their mythological form. Are their different species, or is that a perspective type of view (all in the eyes of the beholder)?
Thank you.

Thank you, Nich.
I surely DO appreciate it. According to the Aswang site that I got MOST of what I THOUGHT to be correct information, "Typically, an aswang is revealed by using a bottle of a special oil extracted from boiled and decanted coconut meat and mixed with certain plant stems upon which special prayers being said. When an aswang comes near or roams around the house at night, the oil is said to boil (or froth into bubbles) and continue boiling until the aswang departs."
I (underlined) took that to mean that a person who thinks that one is visiting their home was to boil the oils, not that there is an oil ON the aswang.

So, How does one happen to gain an aswang in their family?
They LOOK like a human, or are they human shape shifters?
You say that as one dies (how old is "old" for one? Do they run on human years?), he seeks a receiver of the black stone out of the family. Does it BEGIN with a curse, or is it an age old curse? Uh, like ONE family in Filipino history was cursed, and through the years it was passed down and gained momentum (we have THOSE legends in The States) or could ANYONE be cursed and have to become one?

You know, Nich, from your description (thank you, again, by the way), they are VERY SIMILAR to a vampire.
OK, Peanut Gallery, settle down.
I am trying to be serious here.
Save for the black stone, that is. It would SOUND as if the creatures have the same, uh, occupation (?). I have no idea how to write that. The same thirst and hungers.
I will have to wait until the other questions are answered to know.
Thank you for the links. I WILL study them. Thank you for coming to someone else's story to answer something that had me totally stumped. Legends and folklore, traditions of other cultures is not something that I am well versed in, and I appreciate anyones help in helping me have a more rounded view of things.
Thanks again.

I still haven't been convinced that this was not an owl. Because ranger said it looked like a large bird, that tells me it was probably a large bird.

Just because someone WANTS it to be an ashwang, doesn't make it one.

If I see an owl at my home tonight, I will NOT automatically assume it's an ashwang, mothman, a demon, etc.

I do believe that ashwangs might exist.

But I like to look for a more logical explaination first, before jumping at shadows and breaking out the arsenal.

You know?

Yes whitebuffalo, I myself experienced this thing... I was with my cousin when I experienced this for the first time, we were on our way home from the plaza or what other people call it park but from the philippines especially in provinces we call it plaza (small park situated at the Town) we were celebrating fiesta on that time. Anyways, we were walking our way home since it's not that very far, when my cousin noticed someone or something moving on one of our neighbors roof, we immediately investigate for thinking that it's a burglar. When we are near the house we both noticed that it was studying us as well, like spiderman on a roof crawling and starring directly on us with it's red eyes. We ran as fast as we can until we reached my cousins home...

It looks like human but it's skin are very shiny because of oil... These aswang are using a certain oil to change. They will be faster, stronger, more sensitive in everything including hearing and eyesight. This is like a ritual that they must do. Some elderly says that it's a curse and they (aswang) can only die when they reach the old age by passing a black stone to someone (relative) who is willing to accept it... They will suffer and not die unless someone from the family accepts the stone. If that person accepts it, the dying aswang will release the stone through his/her mouth and give it to the family which in return will be aswang...

That's why, it's a curse to be an "aswang"... Some people don't believe in this thing since they said it's modern now, with all the technology and stuff but still we came from before/yesterday that there's so much in this world we cannot explain. We don't even know our ancestors, maybe they practiced things way back then that we only now understands or even now we don't understand or accepts it.

Excuse me, please, Ranger.
Nich? It really sounds as if you may have had a similar situation. Is it possible for YOU to please explain this all to me? I am trying to lose my ignorance about this topic (for those who do not know me, "ignorance" is the lack of knowledge. "Stupidity" is not CARING to obtain knowledge) and I seem to be sinking further into the tar pits.
I have posted what I have learned in the comment section, but it would appear that wikipedia and the "mythological" creature site is a bit off in the matter. Is it possible to get a THIRD opinion.
I am not trying to be stupid.
I AM trying to educate myself.
Thank you.

DUnknown, where in dubai are you staying? I myself have experiences in dubai and I haven't had time to post it here...

Ranger, I do believe that it's aswang... I remember when I was in my province in the philippines we saw a huge dog staring at us while me and my 4 friends were happy chatting outside the house, we tried to scare the dog just to make him go away but the dog wouldn't even budge, it just stare at us with red eyes and drooling. We then notice that it was really big for a normal dog. We in turn throw stones on it when finally it gave up it runs and with a blink of an eye it turned itself to a big cat! Tell that to criss angel or david blaine. Lol.

But ranger be careful with the guns and knives, you might hurt yourself or your girlfriend with those. You know what I mean, what if it's not just an ordinary aswang and it will make you hallucinate as if your seing the aswang face to face and you fought with it then realize later that it was your girlfriend... Just be extra careful...

Ranger said:

"Hey surya! Vulture and eagles at night? Are you serious?"

Are you serious? You'd be more willing to call the bird-shaped creature a mythical creature than you would be willing to call it (ok hold on this might be a bit of a stretch)...a bird?

Maybe not an eagle, or a vulture that fell from it's perch at night.

But here's a crazy thought...

An owl?

You have owls.

Owls are out at night.

Some owls get enormous.

Besides the "feeling" you get when you hear something on your roof, please explain further why this could not possibly be an owl.

Oh and to whoever said this isn't a ghost/spirit, but it is a shapeshifter. Explain that one too. Shapeshifters, as far as I'm aware, aren't flesh and blood.

Oh, I know, ranger, that is why I posted in my comment that they were not addressed to me.
No.
I have NOT seen a "flesh and blood" creature that could not be killed by conventional means. But we are not talking about a conventional creature, are we?
I have not heard of such a being, I have not seen such a creature and was only trying to clear up the "mist" in my mind as to what this could be, and ways in which to arm OURSELVES against one.
It would appear that the comment section points to the idea of a frenzied feeding. I would HATE to know that these creatures made it to MY side of the world and was bent on it's destruction of humanity.
Thank you for your answers.

Remember its the FEAR that would kill you, these things feast on our fears and that's their objective in doing so in these hauntings. They stop not because of the prayers and meditation it's all because you start to understand and fights them back! And that makes them weak and go away. A direct show that you are not afraid and prepared for them would give then second thoughts. Your fear feeds them, get rid of it!

to white buffalo:

First of all, my previous comments is not directed to you
To tell you the truth I don't believe in throwing salt, garlic or holy waters on these creatures tho I did that because that's based also on myths and I wish they would work. But after some thinkin I thought " Why salt? Why garlic? Why holy water? There's no explanation with that, I mean these creatures are flesh and blood and they do are afraid of people too who fights and stalks them. If they are flesh and blood they can be killed, have you know any of flesh and blood creature that cannot be killed by some solid form weapons? They don't disappear in thin air, they have to escape if they are threatened.

IF IT BLEEDS IT CAN BE KILLED

I don't know if anyone here would rather hold salt and garlic or a picture of his/her deceased grandmother rather than a gun and knife face to face with an aswang!

😆 😆 😆

Thank you, DUnknown and ranger.
I appreciate the explanation.

So, going with what DUknowns comment: Am I reading you right that Aswang is MORE of a "generic" word to encompass a large variety of Unknowns? Much like MOST of the people in MY circle would use the term "monsters" to include Nessie at Lock Ness, Sasquatch, werewolves, and the like.
Interesting how geography does more than just change the scene out the window. Thank you.

For ranger,
I know all of your comments were not directed merely at me, but I will be completely honest with you. I have never viewed a movie that had such a creature in it that you described. I do not base my thoughts on scripts. As I wrote in MY comment, I googled it.
So...
The sites that I found on this Internet are INCORRECT in how to fight off one of these types of beings? In that I added the "To throw salt on an Aswang is said to burn it's skin. Images of Old Crones or Grandmothers is said to dispel them." straight from a "how to fight an Aswang" site, (which had a link to the Manananggal site) and you distinctly stated that "A wooden stake, stingrays tail, bamboo spear are mere movie stuff, You can hurt or kill them with any I tell you"
Http://www.mythicalcreaturesguide.com/page/Aswang?t=anon
Http://www.monstropedia.org/index.php?title=Aswang
And http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/viewarticle.php?id=67 are just a few of the resources that I could locate on the Net. Please keep in mind, with me living in an entirely different local, it would be difficult for me to visualize a creature that is not known to exist in The States.
Is there any resource that you could post, to this site, in which I could get a better understanding of what it is that you report as seeing? Going along with DUknown's comment, I could be researching just about anything, and not getting the correct creature. Your description, while vivid, corresponds to the "image" search, but if this could be ANYthing...
Thank you for your patience in trying to explain this to someone who is ignorant to what it is that you are going through. I really AM trying to picture it all.
Thank you.

hey surya no offense but you're not there when it happened
You based what you know on myths you read as you mentioned, I say these are told to make movie scripts better.
I far more believe they can turn themselve into this creature whenever they like not just like only when they feel to eat!
As I say, it maybe have other things in mind out there, stalking a girl he is fond of or the other way around.
These things I was told don't just fly, they can jump a far distance, told they jump from tree to tree

Whatver we saw out there is what we saw and I'm not the only one who saw it and it's no mere animal you find in encyclopedias or watch in discovery or national geo.

I know he or she or it is out there, my mind is not playing tricks on me, I can bet that he's more afraid of me with my gun and samurai than I of him. I'm not bragging or any but it just how I felt.
My father who has encounters of such also in his native town of negros occ, south of philippines says to me once, " don't be afraid of ghost as they can't kill you unless you have a heart problem but be more of those things that lives in flesh and blood as they can inflict physical bodily harm ". A man once shot something that came from his roof and he swears he hits it. A big black dog he says that jumps to the next roof 20 feet away, the next morning one guy from the squatters area that just came from the province had a gun shot wound and leaves the city afterwards early in the morning and nobody knows where. Robbers goes through your door not through your roof

I hate fake stories as well, and I'm not such one

yeah, I don't understand why the toilets? LOL
Once I scolded my 4 year old son and told him I would put him in the bathroom if he would calm down and eat his meal, just to scare him a little, I put him in the bathroom for about 10-15 seconds and opens it, he still won't stop so I just took him up and tried to calmly pacify him, in the end I was able to, so I took off his shirt as its wet from perspiration and to my surprise I find marks on his back beneath the skin, violets color but not that of a human hand but differently and I was scolded by my mother for thinking I inflicted it on my boy. I regret that day,, so I tell you guys keep your singing low while taking a bath, a shower or any in the bathroom, the next time you find strange marks on your body, the thing doesn't like your singing voice at all... 😆 😆 😆

hey ranger! Try to read my stories too. All of them happened in the philippines. I am now in dubai and currently working here for the past 3 years. I also have some experiences here and the latest is I'm currently living in a villa with a female ghost who resides in the toilet, an old man ghost walking around the garage and a middle-aged man ghost who always hums in the early morning inside my attached bathroom, sometimes he flushes too! Lolz!

This too happened when I was in grade 5, you see we got this mixed breed large dog of ours my older brother tied him to the dead guava tree near the window in our old former house then. It started out 8pm the dog was howling and at times seems like scared so as usual we would just come up to the window in the kitchen to shout at him to shut up, it was like that until we get to bed ourselves as we all thought the dog stop howling when he gets tired and decided to sleep.
But it went on until 11pm and my parents went to our room blaming my older brother why he tied the dog to a new place probably he don't want. So my older brother who was roused from his half sleep then go downstairs and fuming mad at the dog that he gets a coffee cup of hot water from the thermos opens the window and splashes the hot water into our poor dog to shut him up.

To his surprise, the dog just yelp, didn't bother to look at him and was staring scared to something. What happened next scares the hell out of my brother he turns to look at what the dog is so scared off and he sees this big black dog with a head of horse sitting 4-5 feet away from our dog (he says the size of a big great dane dog he remembers), it just turn to him a split second and jump off our 5 feet concrete fence and disappeared.

My older brother runs up the stairs towards our parents room, I yet don't know it so I kept myself tucked to my bed, until they come to my room and my mom told me " There's an aswang, there's an aswang!" she says. I said what? But soon I saw my brothers face so totally scared and shivering, I jump out of my bed and we all slept in my parents room. The next day stories spread to the neighbor, one told us he saw one time a big black dog sitting atop our 5 feet concrete fence from his window but jump off when it notices him.

The old guave tree died they told because the "tikbalang" that's what they call it makes it as its house, they say trees that bears somewhat sour fruits are there favorites and probably it didn't like when my older brother tied the dog to the tree.

My neighbor told me to soaked a big nail into vinegar and nail it to the tree if the nail stays until the next day he says the tikbalang won't leave and fight for his home, luckily it did not came off, a few days later another trees close to it, the "kamias tree" also bearing sour taste fruits also died, we didn't bother that tree, we think it's enough for us and the tikbalang.

i know that too! She was all naked and soaked with oil when they got her. I forgot where she was jailed. They thought she was a burglar or a mistress who's trying to escape the mids of the true wife. Hahaha! They even told that their appearance on the girl's eye is reversed but another really weird thing was when they found the girl not inside the jail house early in the morning and found feet mud tracks of an animal at the back from the window bars of the jail.

Hey thanks DUnknown! I tell you all what I wrote here are all true because after that experience I surf the internet for any info that deals with and told that to my colleagues in the office, that's where I got the idea of salt and garlic. I read of having a pic of your passed grandma will do too.

But I tell you those things are not proven as there's no explanation why in heavens would they be afraid of it in the first place? Salt? Garlic? Old pics? WHY? No one can explain yet they believe that... No offense but that sounds more far to believe, right?

So I say, I believe more to my guns and sharp weapons to deal with them.

I remember my old neighbor told me a story they caught a supposed aswang as they noticed it on the roof of a bungalow house, they are in a two story house, they shaouted at it and it just froze and lay still so all the neighbors gather and surround the house all we're thinking it was a thief, police came and to their surprise the policemen came down from the roof accosting an old naked woman who wouldn't speak, brought her to jail for questioning, gave clothes and put her in a room by herself until morning, and you what? She dissappeared when they check her out in the morning. Now tell me if that's ordinary... This things happen I say it's just hard for those who haven't experience it to believe, I can't blame I too was a non-believer back then,, so the next time you guys hear sounds from your roof in the middle of the night, get your bird cage and hope it's big enough to fit in there.

Hi ranger! Welcome to our ghost community. I do believe in your story for I also encountered them myself: from manananggal, tiktik, barang-almost all kinds. There's a lot of different forms but usually are in the Philippines. This are not myths, for everyone to know-they do exist and real. It's not like someone will hunt them just to show them to TV's or newspapers or other stuff to make people believe. There's a lot of different stories published by different people yet they don't have any published documentary or some sort to prove their accusations & vice versa. So let's us not be judgemental on this and respect stories of others that they wanted to share to us. I'm just being fair for everyone.
[at] surya-are you referring to vampires? Cause they are the ones that can be killed by a stake in the heart. But aswangs can be killed using a stake, but you need more of them too! Lolz!
[at] Hoochler-as far as I remember, in the late 90's, my sister and her friends, who's having an excursion, saw a group of people around past-4am looking at something stucked on a mango tree. What they saw was an Aswang or Manananggal, it was somewhere in Batangas (Philippines).
[at] Schism-aswangs are not supernatural, so they can be killed on any weapons you can find. They are shapeshifters but still on human form.
[at] whitebuffalo-Aswang is classified as a category which is broken down to different classes/names for example are manananggal or tiktik. So us, filipinos, used this term more widely.
[at] ranger-please don't sleep with any sharp objects, it might hurt you in the end. Just keep them somewhere safe and near. Salt and Garlic is your best defense for now. Just place them on your windows & side of your door. I wished you both safe and goodluck! In case, you got to manage to kill it-take a picture and send it to us! It will be a great discovery for the whole world to know!

Regards,

JAM

Aswangs are not ghost that bullets and sharp knives would just go through them, these things I believe can kill them as they are solid in form. I'm not makin out a story out here
A wooden stake, stingrays tail, bamboo spear are mere movie stuff, You can hurt or kill them with any I tell you

I know what sound we heard on our roofs and I tell you it's no bird

I don't believe in things any unless I experience it and it not ordinary, it didn't just once, a lot of times it did.

Pregnant women, eating the dead are usual stories we heard but I got mine and I don't think it's after me, I believe the reason is my girl, I heard these beings fell-off to some beautiful lasses back in the provinces, I raed this article once in a magazine this time its a female aswang or manananggal maybe she was so in-love with guy after they broke up she appeared to his window in that form, I mean she was stalking him! I think its the case we're havin cause my girl experiences the most when she is alone in our house at night.

Now I have a german sheperd in addition, and he let's out this scary howl during the nights always between 11pm until 3am and he is always looking up our roof.

Hey surya! Vulture and eagles at night? Are you serious?

I was also a non-believer before but when you experience out of the ordinary that you cannot explain?
Think again

Hm I'm not too familiar with the folklore in the Philippines and similar beings. But I'm pretty sure the salt and garlic is a good idea but the whole gun thing is a little out of the ordinary. I just went to the wikipedia page of the aswang and the silver stuff is basically from the influence of the West. Well I'm a believer in this kind of stuff but still try to find out the logical reasons first.

Interesting choices of weapons, I don't know much of Aswangs, for they arnt told in America, but we got big foot the occational Chupacabra and Werewolfs, Ireland has Lock Ness, So yea I can't say 'dont use that on the aswang' so I can't be very helpful, but you may have seen one and if you do kill it, send it to a museums and stuff so there is proof of its existence.

Uh, yeah.
What astounds me about this story is that you had the fore site to sprinkle the roof and walk with garlic and salt, but you would fight this ghoul with purely HUMAN defenses. I am astounded.
To throw salt on an Aswang is said to burn it's skin. Images of Old Crones or Grandmothers is said to dispel them.
Aswang's ARE shape shifters, according to legend, but I have not, as of yet, discovered a sight that explains the FLIGHT of this being from your rooftop.
Are you certain that you are not referring to a Manananggal? They are often mistaken for an Aswang. Manananggal's are said to hate garlic and salt, are known to avoid daggers, light, vinegar, spices and the tail of a sting ray which can be fashioned as a whip.
Do not take my word for it. Google it. That is what I did.
Thank you.

Your choice of weapons to use was a broad one indeed, from samurai swords to garlic and salt. Interesting story. What I do believe is that you are extremely superstitious. You are quick to assume it is an aswang and will barely attempt to entertain the idea that it could have been a large bird (that's what I'm thinking it is). Let's look at the obvious here, you live in a penthouse and there is only sky above you. You're going to have birds bothering you and your dog. My advice is to stop running around with dangerous weapons. Nothing has hurt you so far, so I doubt that anything will. As far as the voices go, they are probably voices from your downstairs neighbors that are being carried to your penthouse via the air ducts or even pipes. Last but not least, you should take care of your dog better than you have been doing.

May or may not be supernatural, either way... Put the weapons away. Try bringing in spiritual leaders to do a cleansing within and outside your penthouse. Move the dog to a location where he/she feels safe. My goodness, sleeping w knives, guns etc... THAT doesn't sound safe...Blessings, Ghostseer

I don't think it's an Aswang the behavior of one is not what you describe. That there is something there I would not doubt, but I don't think it is an Aswang.

Good luck and gep us posted. Be very careful you don't want to end up hurting yourself or your girlfriend or even someone else.

For anyone else who doesn't know what an aswang is:

It's interesting how different cultures have different types of ghosts. I've never heard of anything like this ghost in the US, but I am supposing that they are common to hear about in the Philippines.

I *really* don't think you should be "hunting" anything with weapons. If it's supernatural, it's not like you can "kill" it in that way, anyway.

If this thing is supernatural, your guns won't kill it.

If you try shooting a ghost, the bullet will go straight through it and may end up finding it's mark on an innocent person or animal.

Because it sounds like a bird to you, and all it does is scratch on your rooftop, I think you are just scaring yourself.

Many owls DO get as big as dogs.

Please please please do not kill an owl or any other innocent creature just because you are overly-zealous about killing whatever is scratching on your rooftop.

We have pigeons that land on our roof and make weird noises and scratching sounds.

Sounds to me like a case of paranoia.

If "aswangs" sounds and look just like birds from far away... I'd be willing to bet that they ARE birds!

Sorry, I just don't like this story. I forsee some innocent child or pet getting killed over this.

I think you are probably the most dangerous thing in your yard, not the aswangs.

As I read this story, I couldn't help but notice the prevalence of weapons and the brandishing thereof. I am all for self-defense and own weapons myself for that same reason, but I don't think you will have much luck killing supernatural creatures with conventional weapons. I admit to not knowing anything about the lore of an "Aswang", but I bet the number of them killed each year from small arms fire is zero.

Be careful that your zealous Aswang hunting does not kill a family member, neighbor or pet. All throughout your story I kept thinking of the Christmas Story kid and everyone telling him he was going to shoot his eye out if he got a BB gun for Christmas. Be careful or you'll shoot someone else's eye (or worse) out.

I thought the aswangs preyed on children, pregnant women, and ill people. This aswang has no need to really move on the roof as according to myth they wait for the victim to go to sleep and can lengthen their tongue to reach the victim while it is still on the roof. If the victim is awake, they spin out the tongue to the fineness of a spider thread and let it float on the air while waiting for the victim to go to sleep. As for using your so called a35, 45 and whatever else you have, myth says you need to stake the bastard not shoot or knife.

Well keep us posted. It may be a Vulture or eagle!
