Church Ghost

My name is Rick, and I'm almost 40 years old now. When I was about 18 or 19 I played guitar in a couple of different southern gospel groups. No big name groups, just friends and family mostly. One particular group I was in at the time had an invitation to sing at a church in Nashville, maybe 800 miles from where we all lived. I was excited to go, because I had never traveled that far to sing before and didn't know what to expect.

When we arrived we were greeted with kindness, and were informed the church would be observing homecoming celebrations. There would be five groups in total scheduled to sing. The time of year was in mid July, unbelievably hot. The church building was an older house that had been converted into a church, I had seen this done at a few other places that I had been before. The church had been nicely furnished and decorated, and I was just looking around to get acquainted with these new surroundings. I noticed that all the windows had been nailed shut. There was no cooling unit, not even a ceiling fan, only the front entrance door was left open, but it was no help.

As the first group was singing, I noticed frigid air stirring around my ankles. I didn't think much of it then, until the lead singer of the first group, stopped in the middle of his song, and shouted "WHERE IS THAT COLD AIR COMING FROM". There was dead silence for maybe a minute or two, with everybody just looking around looking for the source and shaking their heads, with no reasonable explanation. Still I didn't think much of it, other than it just being an odd occurrence. Definitely not a ghost or something paranormal. I didn't believe in that stuff, and thought they were stories that people just made up to scare someone.

If anyone tried to tell me a ghost story or experience, I would listen, but later questioned their credibility, thinking to myself, do they really expect me to believe such nonsense? I had never seen anything to even make me wander if any of it could be real.

Our group was next, and the speaker asked us to get ready. We moved to a side room, to strap on our instruments, and waited to be introduced. While we were standing and waiting, something caught my eye. In another side room we were facing, there it was, a hovering bright, white neon, looking light in the shape of a small size comet, or the size of a nerf football, with the front end rounded, and back end sort of tapering to a tail or hazy point. As soon as my eyes fixed on it, the light whisked to the back of the room, up to the ceiling, in the farthest corner. Then the door slammed shut hard, and the door handle jiggled violently for about 3 or 4 seconds, then it was over. I could not believe what I had just witnessed. I turned to look at the other people in my group, and their mouths, and eyes were wide open just like mine. I knew without saying a word that they had seen what I had seen.

We finally were called out to the main part of the church, and we did our set of songs. I was in a daze the whole time we were performing, asking myself what just happened, and to this day I'm still not sure.

It was so real and moving, there is no way I'll ever ever deny it happened. I would just like to know what it was.

When we went outside for lunch, we asked the people that invited us if strange things like that happened allot. They acted like they didn't know what we were talking about. I'm sure they have seen something. That presence was too strong to not be noticed! Since that time I've never seen or experienced anything like that, and I hope I never do.

When I try to tell this story I see people looking at me the same way I used to look at people telling me their stories. (Used to) I am just left wandering what is out there, and what is it capable of?

If anyone can help me understand I would greatly appreciate your help. This has changed my life and definitely my way of thinking.

Hello In my opinion Nobody can tell you what that was. It's obviously did not want to be bothered or would not have run back into the room and shut the door.

I am a believer in God,Devil,Heaven, Hell. I don't really subscribe to a preferred religion just the Power of God and my faith in him. Now, I have been seeing things and hearing thing since I was about 6 years old I am now 42. I was always told paranormal phenom was the devils work, but I know my God gave me a gift of sight and feeling for these things or I would not be able to do them. You have been blessed with a gift and there is purpose for it I promise. I have always told people. " I have never seen God, but I sure do believe in him" I think it holds true with spirits, just because you don't see them, doesn't mean they don't exist. You will more than likely always question that event in the church, but I can assure you that you were meant to see it or you would have.
God Bless All

I think it may be of help to you to separate the two issues. Matters of faith don't need to be proven. That's why they are called faith. However, paranormal phenomenae are pursued as a matter of science - i.e. A system of observations, evidence, proof and repeatable results. The two issues are not irreconcilable. It makes sense to me to have one's faith (in this case your belief in God, Jesus, Heaven and Hell) and still have had a very real paranormal experience. One doesn't negate the other.

I was raised up in church since I was a child, I believe in GOD, JESUS, HEAVEN, and HELL. I've never seen any of these but I still believe that they are all real. For me, it would just be a lot easier to know they really and truly exists, if I could have just seen evidence of one of these items with my own eyes. As for the experience, and the object I saw in that church, I can say for a fact it was real. I was there. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm having doubts about the things I was sure of and sure of the things I once doubted. I never intended for this to happen, but this has really got to me. Thanks to everyone for the comments and your advice.

American Christians, especially of the evangelical bent, have a real hard time with psychic phenomena. It's usually perceived as originating from the Devil, or some related unsundry source. I'm going to go ahead and guess that your hosts were either being dishonest with you about past paranormal activity in the church (denial in hopes it would just go away) or they just wanted to shut down the possibility in conversation to keep Ol' Scratch away. This is a real connundrum for the faithful because places of worship tend to be among the most haunted locales

To be fair, some Christians have well opened up to a sincere curiosity about the paranormal. Some have even embraced it as a part of the Divine and its mysteries on the earth. What do you make of it, after thinking about it?

My theory on this is in agreement with libertybelle. The feelings I get when I read this story are of hatred, anger and betrayal. So, I think that there was some kind of demonic or infernal presence in the house before it was converted. Although there are some religions (and you sound like one of them) who perform sacred ceremonies on a building before using it for services. But, if not, I'd go with my first instinct and say that it's a hellish presence angry that his dwelling is being used for good.

You said that the church was a converted house. I suspect that whatever it was is more connected to the house than it is to the church that now is occupying the space.

Just my two cens' worth.

Love, Peace, and Joy!

Wow what a great experience. I agree with Bldfalcon. I do not believe that you should have been afraid of this and you still should not be afraid of it. It had to be something so good because God aloud it to be in his home. ❤ Jasmin

What better way to understand about life after death?. All it takes is one experience to change your way of thinking. Don't try to over think it, it is what it is...Blessings, Ghostseer

It couldve been a preist or pastor (like bldfalcon said) that had died who served the church. Maybe he was too attached to move on?
Very interesting story

well, I'm assuming your religious. I am too. The supernatural itself made me believe in heaven and hell. Advice from your experiences, it could be either a preist or a pastor that died in the church or church goers. Obviously, it can't be a demon, becuase the church is surrounded my goodness. But demons can enter a church, if the church itself is corrupted. Thats just a theory. It could be a random ghost just trying to wait for the portal to open up to heaven or hell.
