Wow that's really creepy! Being new to the paranormal community I don't know a whole lot but I can offer some suggestions. Maybe the girl was possessed by a demon (the shadow) and was killed during an exorcism in which the demon was partially separated from her soul but not completely, so that they are still bound together by a thread. This could also explain why the demon appears in her shape but "mangled" as you said. Another thing you could say is that it has her recognizable form, but is distorted.
