Reading this is like I'm watching a movie of 50's with a sad but beautiful story. When the movie finished, it left with a space in the heart. A blessed woman your grandmother is.

Great add~on is actualy kind of sweet he got his christmas gift before christmas and had chance to play with it, and yes can imagin how it would have been on christmas day seeing the present un opened.

Also the "man to man" chat with him and your grandad would have had to mean a lot to them both and a very speical momment

I also wanted to share some fateful resolutions that Earl and the rest of my family went through together months before his death. These things never seem important at the time of their occurance but they make perfect sense when looking back:) A month before Earl's death my mother and Earl had been bickering with each other as teenagers do. My mom had gotten the bright idea that she would get back at him by dragging a Christmas present out of the attic that my grandmother had bought for him. Her thought process was that on Christmas day Earl would have nothing, which was ridiculous because my grandparents would have just bought him something else. Anyway, she drug out this colossal model car set from the attic and Earl's reaction was anything but what she had hoped. Earl was ecstatic. He stopped arguing with her immediately and took it out without pause and starting putting the thing together. Since he opened it my grandparents let him go ahead and have it. My mom got the beating of her life for giving it to him, but later that year, at Christmas, the family would sit around the tree and thank God that Earl had gotten his Christmas present too. Can't imagine if they had found it in the attic around Christmas.

Earl used to also sneak my grandfathers cigars and cigarettes and this would drive my grandfather crazy. You already know he would take his whiskey too:) My grandfather would always lay into Earl for doing this but one day something came over my grandfather. He came home from work, found Earl and invited him out to the curb of the street. He gave Earl a cigar and the two of them sat on the curb and "talked and smoked like men." It was a moment neither Earl nor my grandfather would ever overlook.

Leehome - So sorry to hear about the loss of your uncle. One thing I remember someone telling me is that when someone passes away, that means that there is a special job in heaven that God has that He knows no one but that person could fill.

Just curious about Martin though, did he only commit murder the one time or has it been multiple times?

So many great elements, but I think my favorite is your Uncle Jamie, getting excited at seeing him, and your Uncle Vincent's account of seeing them playing in the back yard 😊...

This is a very refreshing story to here! It sound's like he is a very playful young boy! Maybe he never wants to grow up? I don't really know! Thank you for this! I was looking for Ghost Stories via Google for my Course work and this story was an inspiration and made me join this site:)

Definitely one of the best stories on the site. Your subsequent post in the comment section about the trees bowing down to your grandma gave me chills - in a powerful and positive way. That was a holy moment.

Hi Leehome, agreeing with Elephante81 this is an A++ story. So wonderfully written, you made me feel like I was there. It was such a terrible tragedy what happened to Earl, he was so young. It is amazing how the family was able to pull together while suffering such a loss. I also feel terrible for Earl's friend Martin. He was never able to come to terms with his death. I feel like I just watched a movie, this was just amazing. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. This is one is definitely going in my fav's 😊 ❤

So nice to think that your family were so accepting of your uncle staying around and accepted that when he was ready he would go to where ever he was ment to go, saying that he might be where he is ment to be!?

To Geetha50, my grandmother was so strong. One thing I didn't mention in the story is that when my grandmother was walking down the tracks to the accident she spoke to God and said that she didn't understand his plan but she was giving her son up to him. She felt it was his will and she wasn't going to question it. She said the trees on both sides of the tracks bowed down as she walked past them. This meant to her that the trees recognized that she was walking in the presence of God. My family always wanted Earl to cross over. They wouldn't want him to need this place. My grandfather passed away in 1999. Earl was his oldest son that he never got to see grow up. I hope that my grandfather's passing helped Earl if he hadn't already found his way.

To bacchaegrl, thank you for your comments. It's strange to say now that my very first conversations about ghosts were with my grandmother telling me that my uncle's ghost was around my grandparents' house. My introduction to the concept of ghosts was to not be afraid of Earl's ghost. I was introduced to the idea of ghosts through learning about him and because of my family I was not afraid even as a child. The family would talk about it like they were normal events. They would say that Earl loved playing pranks when he was alive and that's what he continued to do.

Good storytelling... The Old South comes through in this. I was born and raised in the south in the 60s - live in new york now. This story kind of took me back, though I never experienced anything like this. Thanks for sharing.

This is the type of story I love to read. Beautifully written, but terribly sad. Thank you for sharing all of those intricate deatails and interesting stories. I'm glad that Earl didn't scare you, rather he was playful and almost happy. Beautiful story, just beautiful.

First of all, welcome to the site. Secondly, your story is well written. I'm sorry for the loss your family had to go though. Death is never easy to face but to die in such a way as your uncle did probably was even harder. Your grandmother must haven been a strong headed woman to hold her head up high though such a tragic event. The story also brought smiles to my face many times in the story.

Just got a question for you. Did anyone in your family ever try to help your uncle cross over?
