Great story and wonderful detective work by Lou. I really, really felt the atmosphere of that desolate windy place. I love a good paranormal tale but just as much love a well thought out and plausible, scientific, rational explanation. Bravo to all!

Aah Rook, I knew I could count on you! π
The scary feelings only started after the arguments on the phone! I think your guess might just be 'spot on'!
Depression + high EMF = paranioa/fear.
I will admit now, that I was paranoid, that last night of night shift... I most probably babbled hysterically to the Dr. And he thought "Let's get this 'nutter' out of here!"
Thank you Rook, for your contribution, it really was helpful.
PS It is wonderful what hind-sight can do!

Shellzy, I remember reading your scary experience. It creeped me out! As to the 'fight or flight' thingy, mine was definitely all Flight! My gut was telling me... Run girl... Run for your life!
π¨
Yes, I suppose I can chalk it up to one of life's 'great' experiences... One I could easily have done without!
On the other hand, if I had not been given that medical discharge, my life may have turned out very differently... Who knows? I might not have even married my wonderful husband...
Thank you Shellzy, for your comment.

Hi JS, you may be right, about Lou 'cracking the code'. π
Just imagine, if I had been SLIding as well, (not that I do) I would really have been needing a change of undies!
Thank you for your comment, it is a pleasure to share with people like you! β€

Isandhu, I also found the doctor's reaction 'odd'! He didn't even give me a proper examination. Mainly, he just listened to my 'story', before writing out my discharge. I have no clue as to whom he spoke to on the phone, or what was said... So who knows? π It may have been all in my mind... Maybe not.
Yea, I did want out of that job... And badly! π¨
Thank you for your comment.

Fergie,
Lou seems to have covered what I was going to suggest. The 'EMF' fear cage, coupled with your feelings of depression due to the fights with your fiancΓ© over the phone... Now that I've typed that out I have a question...
Did you have a problem with the Kitchen area BEFORE the arguments began with your fiancΓ©? I ask because if it was afterward the 'EMF' cage may have somehow amplified your depressed emotional state into a heightened state of fear/paranoia. Just a guess as to what may have been happening.
Thanks for sharing, I hope the answers you are seeking can be found.
Respectfully,
Rook

Hi Fergie
I can relate to this horrible feeling you had. At one of the previous jobs I had I worked in the layby department and the second level of the area gave me very similar feelings you had in the prison! It is hard to explain but the intense feeling to get out just overwhelms your senses. I think it is part of our 'fight or flight' instincts that kick in when something isn't quite right...
One thing I have learnt is to trust your gut instinct, usually if your brain and body reacts like this there is a reason even if you can't necessarily see it.
Once again thanks for sharing! Even if the job wasn't for you at least you can say you have done it and put it all down to life's great experiences! π β€

Hm, I think Lou has cracked the combination to the safe. I still loved this story though. It reminds me of classic novels i've read. Thank you for sharing Fergie.

I would suggest that these panic attacks associated with the kitchens were a product of your own mind - perhaps deep down you just couldn't take this job and wanted out. However, I find the doctor's reaction odd. It may be the prison had referred others who had experienced similar symptoms on the job and knew that he couldn't help you. That makes me suspect it wasn't just in your mind, although this would still fit with LouSlips' theory about EMF.

Lol Lou, trust you to come up with a 'clinical' explanation. π
You are correct though - all stainless-steel and white tiling! At his point in time... I am willing to accept any explanation... Other than ghosts!
Cage in a cage? Humm... Could very well be!
Thank you for your logic Lou. π

Fergie,
Just curious. Kitchens certainly have a high need to electricity and improperly grounded current can jump to plumbing and everything else. I was just thinking that maybe between the reinforced concrete, appliances, likely metal table tops and all the elecrical wiring and devices, it may have created a fear cage effect. So, a cage in a cage?

Lou,
Not that I am aware of! There was mainly fluorescent lighting in the offices and passages, also in the kitchens. The stoves were all turned off, except for 'cooking hours'. Or have I got it all arse about face? π

Geetha, Are all prisons supposed to be haunted? π€
This was a 'medium' security prison, okay, there were 'lifers' in there, but not 'hardened' criminals! A few murderers, but mostly for crimes of 'passion'!
One lady was there because she shot her husband dead. She was 7 months pregnant at the time; came home unexpectedly, & found him in bed with another woman; took a gun out of their wardrobe, & shot him in his bed!
Most of the others were there for 'white collar' crimes, the law was much stricter in those days!
No, I was never able to find out what dark forces came into play with those accursed kitchens! I am not sure that I care to either!
Thank you for reading Geetha, and your comment. π

Aren't prisons suppose to be haunted? With out the evils of world trapped all in one place?
Personally, I don't think the prisoner's story influenced your mind set because the lady's husband died in front of the sewing room and although it was close to the kitchens (from your description), I don't think the man was haunting the kitchen area.
Were you able to find out what kind of forced were at play in the kitchen?
