This how I arrived to your story. A searh on "breathing sounds no one here" I'm aware that in my home someone did pass on downstairs here in my office. We had experiences with moving objects. But after a the first year of living here it has stopped. A long story I don't want to get into. But twice sitting here in front of the computor in total silence I've heard someone breathing. I even held my breath to make sure it wasn't me. The sound was coming from the same part of the room we had experiences. But as soon as I get up to go check the sound disappears. I was doing a search today to see if anyone could explain the sound such as outside noise. But I guess this guy is still here. I don't have any fear about this anymore because it mostly now saddens me that a person stuck. Anyway I think what your hearing is real.

rstahley - I did look, but there was nothing over there that I could see. As far as temperatures go - the heating system had hiccups as in: sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. The night I wrote about it didn't, so the whole room was cold and I was under layers of blankets and comforters. I didn't feel a change of temperature when I approached the place where the sound was coming from.

I was really freaked out while reading your story. I am afraid of the dark... And I'll be 25 next month...pathetic, I know 😢. So, if I heard breathing in my room that wasn't coming from me, I don't know what I would've done. I think I would've just stayed frozen, with the blankets over my head.
You said that you could tell where these noises were coming from. Could you see anything in the corner? I don't think I would've looked, but maybe you did. And when you finally went and switched the light on, did you feel anything, like cold air or anything?

I can't help you but you're not alone. The EXACT same thing is happening to me; basically. If you read 'someone is watching me' then you'll see that we have quiet some similarities. At first I was exactly like you freak out but as time went on I started to feel less scared and more looked after.
Isn't it disturbing to hear the breathing though? I was so disturbed when it started I would keep holding my breath like you did!
Hope you find some answers and if you do; could you tell me?

Thank you for all the comments! Whenever I experience something, I try to find logical explanations and usually do. These breathing sounds were the only ones difficult to discount because of how distinct and pronounced they were. So it may well be that they came from passing spirits not intent on harming me. It also fits that they stopped when I switched on the lights, in a way. But I also like the angle offered by Wolfreal - I have never really thought much about the general acoustics of the places where I heard these sounds, but they may indeed have been natural sounds that were somehow amplified. Thinking about it, they always seemed loudest at night. So if they were natural and came from somewhere else, the normal noises of the day would have drowned them out to some extent and made them more noticeable when everything was quiet. If I ever hear these sounds again, I will most definitely try to explore them... That may never happen, but if it does, WolfReal, you have helped to make them less scary and given me incentive to see where they are coming from.

I offer this for thought. I have backpacked by myself on occasions. When in the woods by yourself, every small noise is amplified 10 fold if not more. A mouse or squirrel digging around in the leaves sounds like a Black bear going through your camp. Seriously no joke. I offer the idea that the noise you have hear is very really but perhaps amplified by something you are doing.

Maybe it went away after it realised you accepted it was there. Or maybe it was just curious? Who knows!

If it wanted to hurt you, I suppose it would have done so. So its a good thing that it went away 😳

Sometimes our ears play with our senses but things can actually happen that would likely suggest otherwise, with your account I take it that you haven't experience much since it was just a mere passing spirit

No, I don't still live there and haven't for some time now. In this particular place, no one heard them except me - as far as I know - because that was the only time they occurred there - again, as far as I know.

In other places, I have had other people experience these sounds, but funnily enough rarely at the same time as me. Sometimes, when I got really spooked, I would call someone into my room if people were around and ask if they heard anything, without saying what that those sounds might be. Most times, no one but me heard anything. Sometimes though, they did and then it seemed to be exactly the breathing sound, from their description.

Actually, when this was getting too frequent and I was getting worried - before Dublin - I had myself checked out by a neurologist who found absolutely nothing wrong. That is not to say that this wasn't in my head. Believe me, that's a possibility I have considered, so no offence taken.

hmmm...do you still reside there? Please don't take offense, but did anyone else hear them? Like guests?

Snags67 - I am really sorry to hear that your daughter seems to be experiencing something unpleasant! I really hope there is a way to determine the source of the problem soon.

Hobbyholly - a very good suggestion about the radiator. I know the ones you are talking about, but the one in my bedroom was relatively new. Not as in "installed the previous year", but not the one with the hissing sounds you are talking about. As I know those sound they probably would have been easy to identify. The radiator was under the window, near my bed. The breathing sounds came from the other side of the room.

Did you have the old fashioned radiators in your room? I live in a very old, 1900s era house. We have hot water heat, and sometimes (along with the popping noises) they make a hissy/breathing type noise
