hmmmmmmmmmm, was there ever anything else about the sisters? Any occurances in the house? As the other reader stated, it may have had something to do with the yarn, or the bows or even the crochet hooks that they used.

I have many (over 50) crochet hooks and over half of them I can trace back to my great-great grandmother. These may hold history.

If the sisters crocehted all of the time and used this as a hobby, they may have had yarn and/or other supplies given to them, or they may have purchased the items second hand, at garage sales or second hand stores.

This may have been what was the cause of the doll. Between you and I, I would have done the same thing you did. Of course, most dolls terrify me as it is.

the yarn might have a history behind it but it sure wasn't a light trick. This is all I can think of, if I think of more ill tell you. Interesting story.
