The first thing I think you need to do, is get over the fear. You won't be able to accomplish anything until you have that under control. Be objective as possible when an experience happens, try to stay calm.
Ask yourself, why are you afraid? Has the entity done anything frightening? Or is it just a fear of something unknown, that you don't understand? Nothing wrong with being afraid of something you don't know or understand. It's natural. Has the entity ever done anything threatening? I wouldn't consider the tap a threat in any way, it was responding to your question. If there has been any other contact made, think about it, in the context of the situation it happened in, and decide if you would think of it as threatening or not. If you come to the conclusion it's a simple fear of the unknown, educate yourself on the paranormal.
When or if you feel you are ready, you can try to communicate with your housemate. EVP is, in my opinion, your best bet. Do not mess around with ouija boards, they are very risky if used incorrectly. And absolutely do not attempt automatic writing. That's even riskier than the board. The board and automatic writing act as an invitation to wandering entities. EVP is not an invitation, it will only pick up an entity already there. Just grab a cheap voice recorder, ask some questions, or set it to record and go on about your day. Check it later to see if anything has been recorded.

i would first suggest apoligising to youre family for disbelieving. That said I might be able to give some advice. First try to communicate face to face find out what she wants. This is very scary I know but if it canbbe reasoned with you might have no problem. Failing that try "smudging" youre house. Wich means burning sage and spreading it about youre home. Carry salt with tou at all times. If this doesn't work try to banish it with the prayer of saint micheal. Failing that contact a coven and ask for there help.
