And Jyot is a holy/blessed flame that is burnt traditionally in an earthen lamp, a very native to this region...

Ah! Many thanks, Ari!😊 As you can tell, I am quite ignorant of Hindu customs. From the wee bit I am gathering from the posts, it's really quite fascinating!
Again, thank you.
Again, thank you.

Ari to the rescue...
Dear valkricry,
Puja/pooja literally translates to worship here. You might think of it as prayers offered to the Gods 😊
Havan/Yagnya is traditional ritualistic way of appeasing Gods or a certain God by offering up homages through a holy fire that is lighted specifically for this purpose 😁
These are Hindu traditional ways of worship.
Regards

Would someone be so kind as to educate me on some of the words used here? Puja, havan, yagya, pooja I gather these are rituals or prayers? How do they differ?
Jygot? Is that a special lamp or candle?
Thanks in advance,
Val

I think that eastern spirituality believes MAN is composed of five elements, earth, water, fire etc. Death is consciousness seperating itself from the five elements. Consciousness is formless and without an end or a begening, it is sat chita anand. It is what's called the spirit. Unlike in christianity, in eastern philosophy god dwells in man and everywhere, and the concept of heaven and hell is absent. You are god, but you are ignorant of your own self. This is because of maya or illusion.
Ghosts have no connection to spirituality. Ghosts are acc to lord buddha a bundle of unworked karma and desires hopping around, looking for a human host to work out its remainig desires.
So you see there is a big difference between soul and ghost terms. I can be wrong though.

Hotrod13,
If each soul knows this then why is a method needed at all?
Let me rephrase that...
I 'feel' the same way... And yet we have 'earthbound souls' (Ghosts) around the world and each Culture has come up with Methods to help these 'souls' remember this fact so that they might cross over... So if a Soul has 'forgotten' that it "...is universal and has no religon, nor does it care for any customs or beliefs. Love is its religon and substance.", as you put it. Would a method from a Culture it is unfamiliar with actually remind it of just what it truly is... Or does it take a method based on a Cultural Norm it knew while 'in the flesh'?
I am not trying to start an argument, I am actually curious about this.
Respectfully,
Rook

The soul is universal and has no religon, nor does it care for any customs or beliefs. Love is its religon and substance. This method is universal. Soul has no ego.

What if the 'soul' is unfamiliar with these customs? Would these methods work for... Say an individual who was raised as a Roman Catholic?

You can help the soul to crossover by lighting a jyot for fourty days. The soul gets the message that its true nature is light and will move to god.

lookingfor answers, I understand your concern. It isn't a good feeling thinking someone you love might not be at peace. I hope you find your answers soon so you and your husband will find closure.

Hi lookingforanswers, how close was the relative to you? If you are of Hindu custom, there are ways to make the spirit cross over. There are certain rules, specifications and who should do such rituals and not all can do it. So, I do not think that you doing any pooja or yagya in your house would help the spirit to cross over. I want to know certain information. After attending the funeral, before entering your house, did you wash your legs, especially the back of your legs. And did you take bath immediately after your return from the funeral. Means whether you are your spouse touched anything in the house before taking bath. Because the spirit might have got attached and that is the reason why in Hindu custom, generally we wash our legs on our return from funeral and take bath fully including washing our clothes in running water.
Who did the funeral rites and immediately after the demise and funeral, there are rituals to be performed in their house to help the spirits to cross over. If the same had not been done or not done properly, it might be cause for the spirits to wander in this world. So, you can definitely ask your relatives about it and if they had not done it in a proper way, they could even do it now.
As far as you are concerned, you can tell the spirit in a soft, louder voice that they have passed on and make them realise that it has to cross over to the other side and request them to realise the fact that it had left the mundane world. May be that could help you to send the spirit to the other side. But my view is that conducting any yagya in your house won't be of any help.
Regards and respects to you.

Ari, I agree. I would rather not have to deal with the paranormal should I have the option.:)
I'm going to start with the puja/ havan; let's hope that that makes all the difference.

Narella, given our relationship with the deceased, your suggestion seems logical. The one thing that does disturb me, however, is that the soul may not be at peace. That is something I would like to have remedied if possible.

Bluerose19, guy123 - I did speak with my husband about this yesterday, and we will be calling in a pandit over the weekend (unfortunately, the only time the both of us will be home is this Sunday) to finalise the puja/ havan.
Guy, to answer your question, I can safely assume that the spirit would not want to harm either of us - it is the recent loss of a parent that we are mourning. Hence I can only believe that the soul needs help to cross over and nothing else.

Dear lookinforanswers,
Thanks for replying.
I would very humbly suggest a thorough medical/psychiatric inspection for you. In my opinion, we must rule out all natural causes possible before turning to the paranormal.

If the spirit presence is really bothering you, then you need to help them to crossover. Like many people suggested, find the right priest and perform the ritual. Special rituals being carried in Kerala are effective based on my experience.
You can also keep the spirit away from your home by performing some pooja at home or temple but if the spirit is your well wisher (difficult to know), you probably don't want to upset it.
Thanks for posting a good story

I'm not sure you have to do anything. Sometimes spirits linger until they are sure their loved ones are going to be fine. She'll probably leave soon. It sounds like the other spirits are there to help your family member. They'll leave when she crosses over.

I am also a Hindu and I think a Yagya right now, is a very essential requirement to be done in 'your' house in the 'name' of your deceased relative. I think you can do that by calling over an experienced Pujari to help perform the puja who will do the needful to help your relative 'cross-over'.After the puja, sprinkle the Holy water throughout the house for its purification. Hope that helps.

Hotrod13, we're Hindu (however I do not visit temples and do tend to keep away from idol worship). I am vegetarian, yes, while my husband is a non-vegetarian.

Ari, it's been only the both of us. It's just my husband and I who live in the apartment, so there is no one else to validate this - given that my husband has not had the same experience of sensing people in the house.
However, what has been bothering him as well are the disturbed sleep routines: he has also been complaining of vague dreams, and finding himself awake for no particular reason.

Thank you for the suggestions, Hotrod13, AM616 and Shady. Is there any particular puja to be done for the soul, or would the pandit be able to guide us suitably?

Dear lookingforanswers,
Welcome to YGS. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
I have several questions in my mind regarding both the experiences that you have posted.
One would be that whether anyone else beside you and the 'tarot reader' see, feel or hear any of the things that you described? I ask this because according to your narrative its only you who who has had these experiences.
Do reply...

Hey there! Get a pandit and ask him to pray for the peace of these souls. Get yourself, your husband and your home blessed. In this way, the spirits will definitely find peace and will cross over. Be good. Thanks.

I have heard that if you tell them you forgive them for what they feel guilty about and tell them its ok to move on, then they will be free and cross over

By duas and ardas, you can also have an akhand paath. The spirit will cross over:
