Melda, how frightening! The bird cowering is what gets to me. The putrid smell is also scary; we had a smell pass through our family room about a year or so ago. I attribute it to something evil just passing through.

The house was very securely locked plus I ensured that the alarm was set whenever I left the house. Nobody tried to break in there. I don't know why the alarm went off that particular night, I suppose there could have been a number of reasons. Perhaps the cat? I don't think so but anything is possible.

I'm pretty certain that something paranormal was in that house. I always sensed something "off" whenever I entered there, even when my neighbour was at home.

Yikes! That would scare the bejesus out of me as well! I've house-sat a few times and had my own share of creepy feelings in there.

That poor bird! And I'm with you on delaying my vacation if I had cat who just had kittens! (cat lady myself here too 😁)

I don't think I would have gone over there alone after that as well.

If the house was still locked up tight, then I wouldn't assume it was one of the gang members. Were all the doors and windows still secured? If so, I'm thinking something paranormal.

RCRuskin - That awful smell is a bit difficult to describe. Almost like rotten eggs but that isn't quite correct either.

I went back home to fetch my husband and fed the animals and cleaned up the feathers and dog food. There was nothing to be seen in the bathroom at all. The window was closed, so the smell was not coming from outside either, it was limited to the bathroom.

In the late afternoon when I returned with my daughter, there was no smell at all, everything was normal.

Of all the details and parts of your narrative, the stench interests me the most. What did it smell like? How strong was it? Could you smell it outside the bathroom?

As a side note, I like the word 'sloffies'.

I have to admit that I'm not a particularly brave person but how do you refuse to look after somebody's animals?

My husband trotting over obediently to the neighbour's house? I think he has simply learned to live with me and my "fads"! I showed him the condition of the house and even he was a bit spooked. He knows me well enough to realise that I wouldn't stage that sort of scary event and believe me, I was seriously upset!

There are some loopholes in my story which I perhaps did not adequately explain, so please read my reply to the previous poster if you have any questions.

I don't know whether the criminal who was killed on the premises had anything to do with these events, it simply crossed my mind as a possibility.

dpny - Your line of thinking is very logical, which is a good thing. Let me explain:

These dogs were large and did not come inside the house, ever. They were outside dogs and never entered the house even when the doors were open. Their beds were in an outside room attached to the house, the door of which was always kept ajar so that they could come and go as they pleased.

The flip-flops were kept next to Em's dressing table. I had seen them there just the evening before. How they made their way to the kitchen, placed neatly side by side, is something which I cannot explain, try as I might. I checked each room in the house every time I went there.

The parrot was very old and quite ragged looking at the best of times. Something must have scared her pretty badly for her to go ripping at the few remaining feathers which she had and the feathers were scattered all over her cage and the floor in a smallish area of the house.

I'm certainly no animal psychologist but that parrot was scared out of her mind! Could she have missed the family? Possibly but certainly not to that extent. The dogs showed no sign of stress whatsoever.

The dog food? No dogs and no humans in the house and I definitely had not thrown it around the kitchen before leaving the house the previous evening. The bag of dog pellets was placed in a very upright and sturdy position in the kitchen and could not have fallen over on its own. Besides that, the pellets were scattered over quite a large area.

Then again, the stink in the second bathroom? Not the cat. She had a litter box which I cleaned out every day and it was kept in the kitchen where I also left her food. The kittens were in a hole under the couch and were too tiny to go wandering around the house. (I also had strict instructions not to allow the mommy cat out of the house, she had to remain with her babies.)

The open cupboards in the main bedroom? Definitely not opened by yours truly. I could have rummaged through every cupboard in that house if I were that way inclined but in the first place I had no inclination to do and and secondly, I respect people's privacy!

Well Good heavens! I have told you that you are a brave soul and this account proves it. I would have had friend husband with me every time I went there, even before the occurrence!

How unsettling to think that the ghostie might be the thief the cops dispatched! Shot dead you say? Well that would explain how he made a perfect mess at Em's house. Poor bird, they're sensitive you know.

Thanks for such a great account of an incident that would have caused me to rush to the nearest spa for some soothing!

The flip-flops might have been dragged to the spot by one of the animals, the food also tipped over by one. The parrot was probably terrified by one of the animals and in a panic, lost feathers from flying frantically within the cage. 😐
