It has been said that depression, drugs, or alcohol may attract negative spirits. Your old house may have had some negative spirits there. When you went off to college, as you said, they may have gone with you. When you experience a heavy weight on your chest, it may have been their way of frighting you in order to feed off your fear. But it sure sounds like you manage just fine, and amazingly held them off for a good many years. The fact they couldn't scare you more shows what strength you must have. If they never manifested themselves more than just footsteps, and a few bumps in the night here and there, while you were growing up in that house, just shows you always had the strength within you. When you know you are strong, and believe in yourself, it's a hard combo to beat.

You mention footsteps up the stairs, did they ever go back down, reach the top & stop, or move around the upper level? Or were they always coming up? I ask because I had an experience with footsteps on the stairs in a house I lived in.
In my opinion the sleep paralysis is not related to the haunting. People who experience it often notice an upswing in stressful or especially active periods, which the senior year & beginning of college certainly are. Also the voices sound very much like the kind of thing your unconscious would be saying on your first days at college. Hypnogogic hallucinations can be incredibly realistic & it is one of the few times your conscious & unconscious mind can both be active & interact. It also makes sense that your faith was the one thing that was strong enough to silence those horrible feelings & doubts from your unconscious.

Ironically the ghosties that pester True Believing Muslims are thwarted by the supernatural superheroes invoking Mohammed or Gabriel.
