From what I have read about werewolf mythology I have to say that this creature could have been the black dog of death which has been sighted in England many times.
The creature has the same features as the black dog that you had seen. The "black dog" is known to be an omen of death meaning that you or someone that you know will die. I am not trying to scare you I just want to point out the possibility.

I don't say I believe this but old wives tails have some sort of truth to them. I am glad you got over this. But you wrote that you have had other experiences but don't know if you can write them down right now. But you have written several already by the time I read this
